Paolo Di Canio lavished praise on the performance of Jake Jervis after the on-loan striker scored two goals on his full debut last night to help fire Swindon Town through to the area quarter-finals of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

The 20-year-old opened the scoring in the 18th minute against League One side Exeter City before adding a second 10 minutes before half time, showing good awareness to steal possession from home keeper Artur Krysiak and then roll the ball into the empty net.

Exeter pulled one back through Daniel Nardiello midway through the second half but Town defended well to secure only a third away win of the season.

Jervis signed a one-month loan deal from Championship outfit Birmingham last week and Di Canio was delighted with his contribution.
“He is a young, talented player and he has not had lots of games in the past,” said the Town boss.
“He comes from a top side in the Championship and he played a part in the game in the Europa League and that means the guy has talent."
